Like every state in the country, Michigan will be need to address its changing climate with infrastructural changes. Michigan itself is predicted to have increased temperatures and to experience more severe precipitation events. Areas with high amounts of impervious surface will disproportionately experience greater flooding; areas with higher impervious surface and lower tree canopy densities will experience the urban heat island effect to an even greater degree. Thus, it is crucial to identify such vulnerable places so planners and stakeholders can develop green infrastructure where it has the greatest impact.
